Based in Vancouver, BC, Chris Couto is a versatile and experienced session musician, producer, arranger, and educator. With over half his lifetime dedicated to his professional career, he has toured across Canada and internationally, performing for audiences including Her Majesty the Queen and opening for renowned artists such as DJ Premier, Booker T. Jones, Ozomatli, and Salif Keita to name a few.
In 2021, Chris and his group MAZACOTE were nominated for a JUNO award for Best World Album of the Year for "PATRIA". His expertise in African, Brazilian, and Latin percussion encompasses a wide range of instruments such as the Congas, Cajon, Bata, Timbales, Bongo, Marimba, Djembe, and an assortment of bells and shakers. His skills on the drum kit are just as impressive, spanning multiple genres including Hip-Hop, Afrobeat, Funk, R&B, Soul, Reggaeton, Reggae, Americana, Rock, and Dancehall.
Chris constantly challenges himself by incorporating various rhythms into his work, pushing boundaries and elevating the music scene. He firmly believes in the power of music to enrich people's lives on a social, cultural, and spiritual level, serving as a vehicle for personal expression. Through his passion and commitment, Chris aims to continue making a positive impact in the community for years to come.
